Police have arrested Michael Zaakir, a 31-year-old man from Wasaga Beach, who faces charges of attempted murder and aggravated sexual assault.

According to the Huronia West OPP, Zaakir was arrested Friday evening with the assistance of the Bracebridge OPP without incident.

On July 31, just before midnight, OPP officers attended a home off Highway 26 in Stayner, where they found an elderly woman with serious injuries.

She was sexually assaulted and stabbed multiple times before the suspect took off in his white 2011 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck, registration 3466AM, police say.

The woman was transported to a local hospital and was later airlifted to a trauma center.

“He is known to the community. He’s been known to cycle the streets of Stayner and do odd jobs for people,” said Elizabeth Newton, Huronia West OPP.

“If anyone sees him, recognizes him, please contact the police immediately. Everyone needs to be alert, keep their eyes open, be on the lookout for him on their bikes or in that truck, and if they see the one or the other contact the police immediately, do not approach him.

According to the police, Zaakir was considered armed and dangerous.

According to the police report, Zaakir was held for a bail hearing and remanded in custody.
