Connection to the main grid remains the preferred solution for the energy transition in the Magdalen Islands

ISLANDS-DE-LA-MADELEINE, QC, September 7, 2021 / CNW Telbec / РHydro-Qu̩bec wishes to confirm that the preferred solution for the energy transition in the Magdalen Islands remains the connection of the islands by means of 225 km of submarine cable from Perc̩.

Over the past year, Hydro-Québec has consulted Islanders and analyzed various electricity supply scenarios. The results confirm that connection to the main grid is not only the best environmental, social and economic solution but also guarantees a reliable power supply.

  • It is the most popular solution, with the support of 76% of the population.
  • It will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 94.5% compared to the current situation.
  • It will reduce the costs of supplying electricity to the Magdalen Islands and guarantee reliable service.
  • It will allow the deployment of an optical fiber link. Hydro-Québec is in discussions with the Government of Quebec to develop a partnership on this aspect of the project in order to meet the needs of the community.

The solution adopted provides for the maintenance of the thermal power station, for use during winter consumption peaks.

Hydro-Québec reiterates its commitment to maintain the level of employment in the Magdalen Islands. We are studying different scenarios, in collaboration with local partners, which will help maintain 82 jobs.

A comparative analysis of the different scenarios will be submitted to the Régie de l’énergie this fall as part of the approval process for the energy transition strategy for the Magdalen Islands, and the project resulting from the chosen solution may be subject to the Régie’s approval.

“The energy transition of the Magdalen Islands is a priority for both the community and our government. The chosen solution will lead to a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption by giving Islanders access to clean and renewable energy, which is essential if we are to meet the decarbonisation goals on the islands and, in fact, throughout Quebec. “

Jonatan julien, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Minister responsible for the Côte-Nord and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine region

“Over the past year, in collaboration with the residents of the Magdalen Islands, we have carried out a rigorous analysis of the possibilities. We are now convinced that a submarine cable connection is, at present, the best solution to the special needs of the archipelago, because it will allow us to use the right energy in the right place. ”
